Notice period vs notice pay
These are two different questions and people often need both. The notice period is how long the notice runs and when your employment actually ends. Notice pay is how much money you receive for it.
How statutory notice is worked out
| Length of service | Statutory minimum notice |
|---|---|
| Under 1 month | None |
| 1 month to 2 years | 1 week |
| 2 to 12 years | 1 week per complete year |
| 12 years or more | 12 weeks (the statutory maximum) |
Being paid instead of working your notice?
If your employer ends your employment immediately and pays you for the notice period instead, that is a payment in lieu of notice. It is taxed differently from your redundancy pay.
